The cause of violent and suicidal behaviour is once again under the spotlight following the mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas which left three dead and sixteen wounded. The shooter, US soldier Ivan Lopez then killed himself.
While there is never one simple explanation for what drives a human being to commit such unspeakable acts, all too often one common denominator has surfaced. That common denominator is prescribed psychiatric drugs, documented to cause mania, psychosis, violence, suicide and in some cases, homicidal ideation.
It didn’t take long before it was reported that Ivan Lopez was on a cocktail of prescription drugs, including antidepressants. It goes without saying that the psychiatric spin doctors will be working overtime to play down the role of antidepressants in the tragedy. However, when the side effects include violence, suicidal ideation, and homicidal ideation, it’s virtually impossible to deny the role played by the drugs.
There was a similar case in September 2013 when it was reported that Aaron Alexis, fatally shot twelve and injured three inside the Washington Navy Yard. It was reported that he had been prescribed the antidepressant Trazodone, a drug that carries a black box warning for suicide, and which is documented to cause mania and violent behaviour.
Add in at least 31 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs that resulted in 162 wounded and 72 killed, and it culminates as a nightmare for Big Pharma spin doctors and psychiatrists. They have to go into overdrive in their attempts at damage limitation. After all, there are huge pharmaceutical profits at stake.
Groups like the Citizens Commission on Human Rights have seen through the psychiatric smokescreen. Even for the most ardent psychiatric supporter, the common denominator is plain to see.
There have been 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs but there has yet to be a government investigation on the link between the drugs and acts of senseless violence.
The safety of antidepressants has been questioned for years now. With so many violent deaths and suicides linked to antidepressants, public safety is being compromised by regulators who claim that benefits outweigh the risks. It’s staggering. Manufacturers and prescribers, or should I say suppliers and pushers, have been allowed to carry on their activities unabated for too long with no accountability. It’s time for change.
